DO YOU KNOW HOW HUNSTANTON GOT ITS' NAME??

According to legend, the fourteen year old boy who was to become the famous St. Edwin, arrived just off the North Norfolk coast in 855 AD.  It is said that as he came ashore, he knelt down and kissed the ground beneath him.  As he did so, twelve springs sprang up near that spot and the water was said to taste "honey sweet".  So, taken from the Norse words of 'Hun' meaning sweet and a derivation of 'Stante' loosely translated into 'abundant place' - the words Hun Stante became Hunstanton over the many years since the time of Saint Edwin!
Another interesting legend is that St. Edwin was beheaded for refusing to renounce his christian beliefs and some of his followers were said to have carried his head and body to another sacred place and buried them there.  That place is today known as BURY ST. EDMUNDS!  The clue is in the name!  However, a wolf is often associated with this legend too and is the reason why effigies of the saint are often accompanied by such a creature.  It is said that a wolf was charged with the mission of digging up the saints head and carrying it back to Hunstanton where it was reported to have been buried in secret and it's whereabouts are unknown even in this age.  Interesting, eh?

This is the village sign for Old Hunstanton - which is well worth a visit if only to view the strange 'candy striped' cliffs!
The sign depicts Hunstanton Hall which used to belong to the L'Estrange family.  It also shows the hall's builder - Richard L'Estrange mounted on his horse.  Richard holds a long spear because, as the head of the family, he held the hereditary title of "Lord High Admiral of the Wash" which means that he could claim possession of anything out to sea for as far as he could throw the spear.  This title - and strange 'law' - is still very much in use today!

A SHORT HISTORY OF HEACHAM.

There are several theories about how Heacham got its' name: Possibly, the name comes from an olde English word "hitch" meaning 'enclosure and land in a river bend'.  Another theory is that it got its' name from its' 12th century overlord, Geoffrey de Hecham.  There has been a settlement here for the last 5,000 years although it officially became a village in Anglo Saxon times (5th century).
Heacham became popular in the 1860's as a seaside resort with the advancement of the railway from Kings Lynn to Hunstanton.  It has been popular ever since.
The Lavender Farm was begun in 1932 and bunches of lavender were sold to passing traffic.  With the purchase of Caley Mill in 1936, it began to realise its' potential in producing lavender for the world market.
The villages' main claim to fame however is for being the birthplace of John Rolfe - who married the famous native american Princess Pochohontas.  After her death in 1617, John Rolfe was killed in an indian uprising in Virginia in 1622.  He and his descendants are buried in the village church, St. Mary the Virgin.  Sadly, Heacham Hall, family home of the Rolfes', was burnt down to the ground in a fire in 1934.  Only the parklands remain.

MEMORIAL PLAQUE.
On Saturday, 31st January, 1953, the most severe gales ravaged the North Norfolk Coast and finally burst through crossing the 320 yard gap which seperated the sea from the town.
By the time Sunday dawned, the 10' high waves had destroyed 35 homes, badly damaged 70 homes, completely destroyed over 180 beach huts and chalets, and more than 6,000 acres of land between Hunstanton and Wolferton had been decimated.
Worse was to come when it was discovered that 31 people had lost their lives.

In our opinion, one of the best kept secrets of Hunstanton; the extensive beautiful beach at Old Hunstanton.  Ideal for walking the dog too!
