CASTLE  RISING:        This is one of the most lavishly decorated keeps in England.  It is set just five miles from Kings Lynn on the A149 - about ten minutes drive from the site.  Surrounded by 20 acres of earthworks, this impressive castle was begun in 1138 by William d'Albini as a present to his wife.  It became famous in the fourteenth century as the home of the exiled Queen Isabella, widow (and alleged murderess of King Edward II).  After her death in 1358, it passed to Edward, the Black Prince who spent vast amounts of money on the fortifications.  When the Black Prince died in 1376, the property reverted to the crown until 1544 when Henry VIII 'swapped' it for lands in Suffolk.  It then went to Thomas Howard, Duke of Norfolk, and remained in the Howard family until 1968 when custody was given to the State.
Dogs are allowed in the grounds and in certain parts of the building.
Well worth a visit.

Castle Rising from above also showing some of the varied and beautiful countryside which keeps people returning to our beautiful county of Norfolk.
